FAQ: Dental Crowns
What steps are involved in preparing a tooth for a crown?
When it is determined that you need a dental crown, we will need to prepare your affected tooth. We will make the tooth a slightly smaller version of itself to provide room for the crown. Then, we will take dental impressions to make sure that the customized crown is made to fit in its place. Then, you will be provided a temporary crown to wear until the permanent crown arrives back from our lab.
How should I care for my temporary crown?
Because your temporary crown is applied using temporary cement, you should be wary of chewing gum or any overtly chewy foods until the permanent crown is in place. If the temporary crown falls off, please do not throw it away and call our office immediately. We will ensure that you have your temporary crown recemented or another temporary will be made as soon as possible to help you avoid discomfort.
How long do dental crowns last?
Crowns can last anywhere from 5-50 years. The average is 10-15 years. There are many factors that come into play when determining crown success. How much of the tooth remains? How is the surrounding gum and bone health? What is the individual’s risk of developing cavities? Is there normal saliva flow? In order to achieve the optimum lifespan of these restorations, these, and many other factors, are all things that need to be taken into consideration when planning and preparing a crown case. Doctors Zack and Elizabeth Huggins are experts in crown diagnosis, planning, and preparation. Please be sure to ask them any questions that you may have.
There are many factors can take several months for your mouth to heal during the dental implant process. When the post is surgically implanted, it will take several months to properly heal. A timeline will be provided by your dentist as your healing is closely monitored. It is best not to rush the healing process, as the fusion of the post into the jawbone is what gives you the functionality that you are seeking from a dental implant.
